Khulani's Children's Shelter
Khulani's Children's Shelter is a children's home and orphanage and is how Soul of Africa initially got started - the idea being to open more children's homes. As of the end of December 2007, donations to Khulani Orphanage from the Soul of Africa Trust amounts to R1,071,570. The South African government will not register any new children's homes and wants children cared for in their birth environment. This tradition is called UBANTU and is part of the extended family living system. Ideally there would never be an orphan, because if the parents died, there would always be another member of the family or community to look after them. However, AIDS and poverty has put a huge burden on these communities, and grannies often have to look after their grandchildren. Soul of Africa's response is the Child Care Development Center (CDCC) which assists these overburdened rural communities which are badly affected by AIDS. Khulani is still funded with the required running costs and are giving the 12 children in our care the best start possible.
