What
is Soul of Africa?
Soul
of Africa (SOA) was created by Lance Clark, 6th generation Clark shoes
and Mike and Sarah Gedye and is based in Durban, South Africa. SOA is
a registered charity with independent trustees set up to invest in facilities
for orphans in South Africa. The charity has raised well over $1,000,000
since SOA's 2004 beginnings and continues to fund the Khulani orphanage
as well as a hospital for babies, Child Care Development Centres and other
projects.
Many of the women working for Soul of Africa are the girls left behind,
whose parents have died from HIV/AIDS. Some workers are grandmothers or
just caring elders who are forced to care for the children because their
parents have abandoned their young ones. Although affected by this dreadful
disease, not all infected by it.
The
charity was set up to empower these women and give them a chance at life
while making the shoes and footballs for SOA. They are given the opportunity
to work and for a fair wage, creating jobs not aid. Whilst they work their
children are taken care of in the Child Care Development Centres.
