Welcome to Soul Of Africa!
Soul of Africa (SOA), is a charitable initiative and a self-sustainable project created to facilitate employment and funding aimed at helping orphans affected by AIDS through the sale of hand-stitched shoes.
Unemployed and unskilled women in South Africa have been trained to hand-stitch these shoes, giving them the self empowering ability to feed their families and provide them with essential health care. These groups are run in the informal settlements around Durban in KwaZulu Natal (the province with the highest AIDS infection rate in South Africa).
For every pair of Soul of Africa shoes sold, all manufacturing profit goes directly to the upkeep and schooling of young orphans, themselves often not infected, who have lost their parents to AIDS.
The charity has raised well over $1,000,000 since their 2004 beginnings and continues to fund an orphanage as well as hospitals, schools and childcare development centres. See projects for more details.
As with the shoes, Soul of Africa is creating employment for women who are trained to hand stitch leather footballs. Plans for a Soul of Africa clothing line are also in the works with all funds raised put back into community projects.
